Just got given a brand new Samsung BD-P1500 for Christmas, and am having problems connecting it to my Lan.
I have tried using two different ethernet cables to connect it to my router (to rule out dodgy cable as a source of the problem), and have tried setting a static ip address, and then using dhcp, but whatever I do I cant seem to get it to communicate via my router to the internet in order to be able to download firmware updates.
I downloaded the firmware update to my pc and installed it via usb stick. The update installed successfully but still no working network connection.
Anyone encountered this problem and know how to fix it?

- This Blu-ray disc can only be played back. A BD-ROM disc contains pre-recorded data. Although a BD-ROM can contain any form of data, most BD-ROM discs will contain movies in high-definition format for playback on the Blu-ray Disc player. This unit can play prerecorded commercial BD-ROM discs. Blu-ray Disc Rewritable / Blu-ray Disc Recordable.

- #2I phoned Samsung customer services yesterday. I explained the problem as I saw it, and all the different things I'd tried. I was then asked did I have any disks that werent playing correctly. My reply 'no'.
The customer services rep then proceeded to tell me that they only recommend upgrading firmware if a disk wont play correctly, and that should that ever happen then I should call them back and they would talk me through how to upgrade the firmware.
I have to say I was rather annoyed at this. According to the manual, you should check to see if a new firmware is available and install it straight away, not only that but the blu-ray player is meant to check automatically and if it finds an update is meant to prompt you to download the update. Why would it do that if Samsung dont recommend upgrading the firmware?
I tried repeatedly to explain to the rep that my issue wasnt the firmware upgrade as such but the fact the machine refused to connect to the internet in the first place to make such an upgrade possible. Surely when the time comes that I try to play a disk which uses online features then they will be unavailable to me when the machine still cant connect to the net, and I was quite clearly told that until that happens they dont want to know, and will not help till then. Of course by then chances are my 12 month warranty will have expired anyway, and then im up the proverbial creek.
Poor customer service Samsung ! - #3One obvious thought is that you may need a crossover cable - I'm not sure about the capabilities of your router or BDP to know if this is the case.
Also do the LEDS on your router flash to indicate Ethernet traffic? - #4I've tried both a straight through patch cable, and a crossover cable and neither worked. In each case the router connection light illuminated, but there was no evidence of any traffic flowing through. The router is a Netgear DG8464GT as provided by Sky broadband Max. The router has a function for displaying the IP stats of all connected devices, and the Blu-Ray player doesnt appear in that list, regardless of whether it has a static, dynamic, or reserved dynamic ip address. Also the Blu-Ray player doesnt respond to ping requests.
Oddly the LAN socket on the back of the Blu-Ray player doesnt have a link/data led on it so there is no visual indicators as to if it acknowledges connection, or thinks its transferring data. - #5I'm afraid you have just found out how totally useless Tier 1 support is at Samsung. If you phone back you might be lucky enough to get someone who understands but it might take a few calls when you get past tier 1 the support staff are pretty knowledgable, it's just the front line that sucks!
I don't have a 1500 but on both my BD P1400 I used to have & current Sony S350 all I had to do was use a straight Ethernet direct to my Sky router & it connected immediately without touching any settings whatsoever. It might be worth doing a factory reset on your player & then just connecting the Ethernet & going to the Download section of the menu without touching the settings. - #6Cheers Paul, i'll give that a try now and see what happens. Will report back either way.
- #7Just done a reset by holding >>l on the front panel for 5 secs which i assume is what you meant. The machine reset and gave me the language selection menu. After selecting English i went to the upgrade menu option only for it to instantly tell me 'This system can not connect to internet for update. Please, check the network setup.'
Any other suggestions? - #8Just done a reset by holding >>l on the front panel for 5 secs which i assume is what you meant. The machine reset and gave me the language selection menu. Well I dont like saying it mate but it does sound to me like the Ethernet adapter in the player is faulty I do know this has happened to one or two people with this model but before you give up hope try a post in AVforums here, there are many hundreds with this player. - #9Thank you for your suggestion Paulr2006. I have registered on there and copied my posts across. I have a sneeking suspicion I'm going to end up having to go back to Costco with it for a replacement unit. I will update on here if any further progress is made.

Yes, have seen your post on there; very surprised you have not received a conclusive answer to the problem yet, good luck hope you get sorted ok. - #11widget, I picked up a 1500 on Boxing Day. Took the ethernet cable out of the Xbox and plugged it in to the 1500and it worked straight away, without changing any settings. Firmware updated ok, although it took about 40mins to complete.

This really is starting to seem like i got a duff one then. - #13All hail Costco. Took the Blu-Ray player back and they accepted it for a refund without a second thought. Not only that, as they were handing me the cash they said they had 19 still in stock and that they have come down in price, so when purchasing my replacement i actually saved about seven pounds. The new one, initially reluctant to connect to internet, happily worked once the router was power-cycled, so at least now I have a Christmas Present that i know works fully.

God Bless Costco
Great to hear your sorted mate & at least the price reduction helped towards your costs of having to return it! - #15Yea, luckily the local Costco is only a few mins away so it wasnt a problem. So now I know thats workin I can sit and argue with my new Archos 5 and try to figure out why it keeps crashing..lol.
At least now i can be a semi-happy-bunny knowin one of my prezzies is workin right. - #16Hi, looking at one of these myself, does it have to be a cable connection or does it have wireless capability, or even could you update via download to a disc? My PC is in a different room to the TV etc.
- #17It has a usb slot on the back so you can download updates from the website onto either a disk or a memory-stick and update that way.
The Internet connection on the device is in the form of an ethernet socket located on the back. I suppose it may be possible to connect a wireless access point to it to bridge to your computer network, but i've not done any tests myself to find out.
The player functions perfectly well without the internet connection, at the moment, but when future Blu-ray disks start using internet links and downloadable media you may want to have one then. - #180
